USA Hospital Department General Operating Set - USA Hosp Dept

Early Ivory small military set with instruments for minor amputation, opthamologic injuries, bullet and foreign body extraction. H. Hernstein label still present on the fabric divider with USA Hospital Dept on the label. H Hernstein label dates set between 1859-1861 afterwhich the company changed to Hernstein & Son. The presence of a key lock also indicates early war design as later sets used sliding military latches for quick access. Later military sets would not need expensive and ornate ivory instruments as well. The set still retains the original purchase label on the divider with total cost of all equipment purchased at 50 dollars(the equivolent of approx 2,200 dollars today).

It also appears that the brass plaque on the set was likely "flipped" after the war to hide the original government ownership. The blank side of the plaque has a dark patina consistent with many years of exposure. The USA Hospital Dept marked side has been cleaned at some point in the past. There is a trabecular pattern imprinted to the metal matching the original hardened glue. The USA engraving is typical Hernstein style but Hospital Dept font is different than usually seen with Hernstein, this may have been added at later date or is an early example at the very begining of the war which evolved to the more typical font we see later in the war.
