USA Hospital Department Field Set by Julius Tiencken:
Julius Tiencken was a surgical instrument manufacturer during the civil war (1863-1872) and was a supplier to Union forces. This rare Civil War surgical set example from a minor supplier has seen some heavy use and postwar improvements. Main features are: Brass bound mahogany case with double military latches.

Missing are gullet forceps, Satterlee's bone forceps and likely urinary catheters. A portion of the inner case stabilizing the handle for capitol saw and including a space for the bonebrush is missing. A fabric separator on the knife tray which formed a circular compartment for small items has been lost off the tray over time. All instruments including bullet forceps, dressing forceps, Hay's saw, bone rasp, tourniquet, and knives are marked Tiencken. Capitol saw is unmarked. Case has been left open with extensive fading of red fabric on sun exposed trays but minimal rusting so case was kept dry for most part.

The most unusual aspect of the set is the handle on the lid.

This is not a feature of civil war issued surgery sets and is usually associated with european manufacture. In this case the handle was a "postwar" improvement by the owner. Inspection of the handle shows the placement is tilted. The right side of handle is lower than the left to a signifcant degree. Although it was wartime these sets were handmade and of high quality-nothing so "off" as this handle placement would have been allowed to leave the factory. Since it was never designed for a handle, placement of four large screws into the lid has caused a crack on the right side of the lid.

Overall good example of civil war issued three tier cased military set from very rare manufacturer.
