D.W. Kolbe was a major contract instrument supplier to Union forces during the civil war. For the makers years of business and addresses please see the Kolbe field kit on this site. A military marked pocket surgical kit is very very rare. Most pocket kits were fragile leather and usually are not in good complete condition when compared to the wood and brass cased major sets. See the Tiencken civil war era pocket kit on this site for a example in good condition.

Per the Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion they should contain probes, caustic holder, bistouries, director, scissors, artery/needle forceps,dressing forceps, exploring needle, compound urinary catheter, tenaculum. Below are pages from Tiemann and Co American Armamentarium Chirurgicum from the 1880's that illustrate the typical instruments in a pocket kit.







The leather on this Kolbe example is in poor condition but has three main sections which survive. The thin leather which originally bound all three sections together has come apart. The leather backing off the compound urinary catheter section has been lost. The kit has two pocket compartments to hold needles, thread, and bone wax. Some instruments are missing but many remain including the tortise shell bistoury, tenaculum, and gum lancet. There is a combination exploration needle and fine groove director, a two section compound double ended probe, and Parker's style combination caustic case and compound urinary catheter. Missing are dressing forceps, scissors, and arterial/needle forceps. Close inspection of the fabric backing shows clear indentations where the instruments have been present esp the scissors or dressing forceps. Despite the poor condition the extreme rarity of a surviving USA Hospital Department pocket kit makes this one unique.
