Small USA Hospital Department dissecting and postmortem set by Kern:
Heratio G Kern was surgical instrument maker in Philadelphia during the war. His civil war address was 25 N. 6th street from 1860-1870. During the war the Union army purchased (slightly over 300) small dissection sets for postmortem exams. Interesting specimens were then removed and sent to Washington for study and education. Here is an example of such a set by Heratio Kern complete with address label. The rare Kern address label proves the set was made during the war and the sliding latch supports its production for the military. The brass plaque is marked USA Hospital Department but is different from most other plaques seen by this collector. In this case, instead of abbreviating both Hospital and Department(see other plaques on this site) as was usual, the entire word of Department is spelled out. Also the lettering is done in block style by stamping rather than the freehand engraving seen on plaques of larger sets. This would raise a concern of faking to enhance the items value. Another possibility would be the plaques small size may have necessitated the use of small stamped lettering to get all the wording in. We do know they used dyes and stamps on the instruments to mark Hospital Department and/their own logos.

Removal of the plaque confirms old glue very cracked with age underneath and modern glue added on top of the old(see Brinkerhoff on this site for another example of this). This does not prove the plaque has been faked but does prove it has been removed and reattached sometime in the past. The patina on the plaque appears to be similar on both sides with no obvious evidence of being polish or tampered with. The outer side shows typical wear and tear and scratching as expected for plaque this old and the inner side appears undamaged so its not been flipped(compare this to the Brinkerhoff plaque on this site). The name Hines has been scratched into the bottom left portion. Research for him is ongoing . I have been unable to find an example of a government USA HD engraved large plaque for a field or capital set by Kern although I have seen sets with blank plaques and they are very similar in type and style to Kolbe sets. They were both in Philadelphia and likely used the same engravers. Please contact me if you have examples of engraved (especially USA HD or USA MD) Kern plaques both large and small sets.
