U.S.A. Hosp. Dept.
Civil War Japanned Medical Pannier

From The Collection of Dr. Scott Watson

A rare Civil War medical pannier with lid lettered: U.S.A. / Hosp. Dept. They were used to carry linens, bandages, dressings but likely also carried medicine when needed. The lid slopes, apparently to shed rain, and features a large lockable latch and side lid hooks. The tin body is japanned a deep purple and measures 19" x 12" x 10". A swivel iron handle is at each side. This is the exact same pannier illustrated in Pictorial Encyclopedia of Civil War Instruments and Equipment by Gordan Dammann, Vol. III, p. 49, upper right. Only four other Civil War tin panniers of this pattern are known. Though light-weight and waterproof, they must have been rather expensive to make and likely date to early in the war.

Other panniers were made exclusively for medications such as those produced under military contract for the hospital department by E R Squibb. He produced a medical pannier with 52 medications prepackaged in tin jappaned containers for the Union Army physicians at a cost of 100 dollars each. Each pannier weighed approximately 88 lbs and was designed to be carried by pack mules or wagon. To give an idea of the volume of business he delivered over 40,000 dollars worth of these to the army.
