Julius Tiencken was a New York based contract supplier to Union forces during the civil war. His contribution as far as total numbers of instrument and sets supplied during the war is thought to be low compared to other contemporaries such as Tiemann, Hernstein and Sons, Detrich Kolbe etc. His address during and after the war are as follows:(per Edmonson's American Surgical Instruments)

1863: 4 Astor Place
1865: 142 Attorney
1871-72: h. 110 W. 29th surgical instruments

Here is a very nice Tiencken pocket kit in excellent condition with original carry case and instruments Note the locking clasp to close the kit. "Snap" circular locks were not used till the turn of the century. Any pocket kit with a snap closure could NOT be civil war vintage. Its impossible to say whether this kit was used in the war or not, but knowing the maker and the dates his company existed allows dating of the set. It had to be made during or shortly after the war.













It appears the inner woven fabric liner to the leather carrying case was originally intended for another purpose. The fabric appears to show a flora pattern intended for display.
