USA Hospital Department Tiemann Civil War Postmortem Set

Small postmortem dissection kit by George Tiemann of New York. Still has intact rare early civil war address label for G. Tiemann & Co. 1855-1863 63 Chatham St and 44 Eldridge
George Tiemann & Co. (early war address) per Edmondson Surgical Instruments

Union soldiers were directed by Surgeon General Hammond to perform autopsies and return interesting specimens for study. The sets came in both small and large versions. The smaller version is frequently confused with a medical students dissection sets as they contain many of the same instruments. Page 96 from 1879 Tiemann catalog show the various dissection and postmortem kits available in the early post war period. It’s likely the same pattern was used during the war years. Only one dissection kit offers a chisel and none have a enterotome scissors. It’s likely these smaller postmortem sets were used in conjunction with larger sets. This would have allowed more than one physician to work at the same time. This small version postmortem set doesn’t have bone saw, costotome(rib shears), and hammer of the larger version but does contain chain retractor, enterotome, blow pipe, metal cartilage knife, steel handle dissecting hook, dissection scissors and small dissection forceps. See larger Snowden set on this site for example of the large version. This set dates from early in the war based on the makers label with plaque engraved USA Hospital Department.
