A USA Hospital Department marked four tier mahogany set by well know civil war supplier Dietrich W. Kolbe. He was in business in Philadelphia from 1851-1878. His address location with corresponding dates shown below are from American Surgical Instruments by Edmonson. :

Dietrich W. Kolbe address and dates:

1856-57: 45 S. 8th
1858: III S. 8th
1859-66: 32 S. 9th
1867-78: 15 S. 9th
A complete example of a large military civil war set with emphasis for bone surgery which at the time meant mostly amputations. There are two other examples of this type of set on this site-one by Hernstein and other by Gemrig. The most common major surgical procedure during the war was amputation so these sets would have been needed. General purpose or “field” sets would not contain so many bone forceps, bone drills etc. but would have a capital bone saw and perhaps two bone forceps. Instead of so many orthopedic instruments a field set would have urinary catheters and sounds, bullet forceps and other general purpose instruments. See the USA HD general field sets by Hernstein , Tiencken , Tiemann, and Kolbe on this site.

The set is large and heavy with four tiers. Typical military style with brass corners, dual sliding latches with no key. Military engraved lid plaque. This set is very rare as it’s complete. All major instruments and knives are Kolbe marked. Large bone forceps also USA Hosp Dept marked.

The makers label is still present and the 32 S. 9th street location was the civil war period business address. Although makers labels are frequently missing, when present, they are invaluable in dating surgery sets.
