J H Gemrig USA Capital Amputation Set


US Army Medical Department marked Civil War four tier set with special emphasis on bone surgery for trauma. Mahogany case with brass corners and bilateral sliding military latches. One corner brass support is missing. Gemrig was a supplier to Union forces during the civil war but few of his sets have survived. His volume of production may have been low compared to other major suppliers such as Hernstein and Tiemann leading to the rarity of current sets. The style of knives, forceps, and bow saw all typical of civil war production. Capital bow saw marked USA Hospital Department. This set was made right at the beginning of the civil war during the transition from Medical to Hospital Dept markings. It has seen use as corrosion from blood staining is present on many of the instruments. JH Gemrig was located in Philadelphia with follow addresses per Edmonson from American Surgical Instruments:
