Finnel Type Tiemann Civil War Surgical Set - USA Hosp Dept

George Tiemann & Co. were present at 63 Chatham address from 1855-1863.
USA Hospital Department Finnel's type Post-Mortem Surgical Set by George Tiemann

George Tiemann & Co. were present at 63 Chatham address from 1855-1863. Therefore, instruments and sets were produced both before and during the early war period while at this address and two different labels were used. (earlier square, later oval) This larger Finnel's type set can also be compared to earlier versions of Tiemann military post-mortem sets which were generally smaller and resembled student dissection sets with a few upgrades like the addition of an enterotome scissor not usually present on civilian small student dissection sets.
See link: http://www.civilwarmedicalbooks.com/tiemann_post_mortem_set.html

An extremely well preserved and little used post-mortem set produced for the United States Army between 1860-1863 in Rosewood case with red velvet. The case measurements are: 9 1/4 by 3 1/2 by 1 1/2 inches. This is slightly longer but not quite a wide as the prewar Finnel's version. The makers label is still present and typical of Tiemann early civil war manufacture(1860-1863). There is also another label Tiemann used while at the 63 Chatham address which is white and rectangular is shape and usually indicates 1850's production and/or very early war production. See link: http://www.civilwarmedicalbooks.com/tiemann_post_mortem_set.html

The set still has it's USA Hospital Dept brass lid plaque intact and sliding lock both indicating military production and ownership.

The set contains 14 instruments. The layout is very similar but not exactly like the prewar version. This set has a pair of enterotome scissors(used for dissection of intestine) which were commonly included among civil war produced sets by various makers. There is a Finnel's handle and amputation knife blade but no saw blade. The small dissection scalpels and hook are ivory rather than ebony. The dissection forceps are of the "microscopic" type. The set also contains a bone chisel, steel cartilage knife, steel retractor hook, Darlings' chain hook retractor, dissecting scissors, silver blowpipe, and large hand held cutting needle for suture closing the incisions of the patient. Tiemann markings are present on the scalpels, steel knife and hook, dissecting scissors, enterotome, chisel, and amputation blade.

The set looks to be complete and doesn't appear to have seen heavy use judging by the excellent condition of the Rosewood case and instruments.
