Hernstein Civil War Three Tier Surgical Set
USA HOSPITAL DEPARTMENT HERNSTEIN THREE TIER FIELD SET

Three tier mahogany case with sliding military latches and brass corner supports by Hernstein and Son. Hernstein was a major supplier of surgical equipment during the war. See other examples on this site. This is a typical "field" set with a wide variety of instruments to treat multiple problems from bullet wounds to urinary obstruction. Both bone ronguers are marked Hernstein & Son along with capital saw, amputation knives, and tourniquet. Bullet forceps are period but I believe are a replacement.
