Listed here is Civil War medical books and surgical manuals by title and catagorized. I have shown the books specifically for use by the Confederate States Army Medical Department with C.S.A. Those books can be found stamped, C.S.A. Hospital Department, and are very rare in that state.

Some of the Civil War books on medicine and surgery are hard backed and bound in leather while some of the small handbooks, such as Stephen Smith's Hand-book of Surgical Operations, was bound in limp cloth. There were very of the manauls and books used in Civil War medicine that were paperbacked but there were a few. The American Journal of the Medical Sciences was an important paper backed book that was used. This journal was produced quarterly and carried current events that dealt not only with military surgery and medicine but also referenced civil medicine as well.
